Government leaders and community-based organizations, especially community-violence intervention organizations, not only must continue to improve VOCA's Crime Victim Compensation and policy, but they also need to work together to implement these reforms. This includes ensuring that state administering agencies have data on their state’s victim populations to guide the use of CVC. It also requires allocating sufficient resources to staff CVC programs and maximize the state’s use of federal funding. To explain these issues, this brief provides an overview of CVC from federal and state perspectives. It then outlines recommendations and actions for community-violence intervention organizations, government leaders, and other allied stakeholders to make the most of the program’s potential to help underserved victims, strengthen violence-reduction efforts, and cultivate the trust and legitimacy they need to promote safety and wellbeing.
