This document provides guidance to law enforcement agencies on how to effectively track nonfatal shooting incidents and other violent gun crimes in their jurisdiction. Topics include defining a nonfatal shooting offense, the benefits of tracking these offenses and other types of violent gun crime, how upcoming changes to NIBRS will impact the measurement of gun crime, and recommendations for tracking nonfatal shooting incidents including how to effectively measure them. This document will be of interest to law enforcement leaders who do not currently measure/track nonfatal shootings but are interested in how to do so and its value and those who already track nonfatal shootings but are curious to see if their methods could be improved.
